Meredith Harman

Biography

harman
I'm from the mountains of North Carolina but have lived in Charleston since 2001.  I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish from Appalachian State, and a Master's Degree in Spanish Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  My career started in 1995, and has taken me to Florida, Virginia, Kansas, Arizona, and back to Charleston, spanning levels from 6th grade to college.  After working at an all girls' private school and a charter school, I feel I have found a new home at Stall.

I live on James Island with my daughter who is in the 7th grade.  I love teaching Spanish, especially culture and grammar, and I try to make every day interesting and fun.  One of my favorite things to do is travel abroad with students.  I love that magic moment when the language comes alive in real-life experiences with native speakers.

During the summer, I travel to Cincinnati to grade the AP Spanish Exam with 1,500 other Spanish teachers. It's a great professional development experiences that helps refresh and inspire me each year.

favorite quote

"The truth of the matter is that about 99 percent of teaching is making the students feel interested in the material. Then the other 1 percent has to do with your methods. And that's not just true of languages. It's true of every subject." ~Noam Chomsky
