Laura Smith

L. Smith

My name is Laura Mack Smith, and I have been teaching since 2000.  I was born and raised in Charleston, attending First Baptist School (Downtown) for Kindergarten through the 12th grade and graduating in 1996.  I attended Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida, Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 2000.  Moving back to Charleston after college, I began teaching 7th and 8th grade English at First Baptist.  I also began my Masters Degree at The Citadel, completing my M.A.T. in English and Secondary Education in 2003.  Continuing to teach 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, and AP English Literature at my Alma Mater for the next 4 years, my (then) husband and I moved to Greenville, South Carolina, in 2007.

While in Greenville, I began teaching English 3 and English 2 Honors at Berea High School, a Title high school in West Greenville.  I thoroughly enjoyed my three years at Berea and remained in close contact with many of my former students, even helping several of them with their college and graduate school essays.

In 2011, I moved back to Charleston and began teaching at R.B. Stall High School, where I have taught English 2 CP and English 2 Honors ever since.  Through my teaching, I always express my intense enthusiasm for literature, grammar, and writing, attempting to awaken the love of English in my students.  Further, I treat all of my students like my own children, nurturing the whole student and “mothering” them when they need it and excitedly cheering them on in all of their successes.  I truly love what I do, and I plan to retire from Stall.

Professionally, my current interests are AP English Language and Composition and English as a Second Language, learning how to strengthen my English 2 Honors students’ skills in rhetorical analysis and integrating new techniques to reach my lower-level ESL students.

In my personal life, I have my very own mini-me, my 11-year-old daughter, Elise; a long-term boyfriend, Rou; and a needy miniature poodle, Henry.  In my limited free time, I enjoy exercise, reading, traveling, listening to podcasts about history and politics, listening to the best rock band of all time, Queen, and hanging out with my people.
