Mrs. Newbern began her education career at The New School, a bilingual school in her native country of Colombia, where she taught English as a second language. She also taught English at the Colombo Americano Institute and at a technical school in Medellin. During this time, she became aware of the Visiting International Faculty (VIF) program, which recruited teachers from all over the world to teach in the United States. She moved from Colombia to Greenville, North Carolina, where she taught Spanish for three years. Mrs. Newbern took a year off from teaching and worked as a translator and interpreter for a company in Plymouth, North Carolina. She then moved to Virginia Beach where she taught Spanish for five years at Azalea Gardens Middle School in Norfolk, Virginia. In 2011, Mrs. Newbern moved to Charleston where she eventually obtained a job as an ESOL teacher at R.B. Stall High School. She was an ESOL teacher for four years before being promoted to assistant principal.
